FOSS Swim Schools (FOSS) is a Minnesota-based swim school with locations throughout the Midwest. Since 2017, Nelson-Rudie has partnered with Paul Meyer Architects to serve as mechanical and electrical consulting engineers on FOSS’ expansion throughout the Midwest.

FOSS facilities are approximately 10,0000 square feet and cover both new construction and tenant improvements of areas typically located within existing retail/shopping centers and converted into natatorium spaces. Pools, with 90-degree plus water, are 2,000 to 2,600 square feet and include state-of-the-art equipment, long swim lanes for students to learn competitive strokes and smaller areas for infants. Facilities also include private changing areas for families, a climate-controlled viewing room and retail space as well as top-of-the-line filtration systems for clean, safe and comfortable pools. In addition, whenever feasible with new locations, FOSS utilizes a c-shaped pool design which creates an easier separation for age groups.

The mechanical systems include a pool dehumidification unit with energy recovery and state-of-the-art indoor environmental quality (IEQ) guidelines air distribution system, an energy recovery system for the locker rooms, and energy efficient plumbing systems. Although the design is similar conceptually from one project to another, we developed several mechanical system concepts to fit within the architectural and structural constraints of existing buildings.

Completely new electrical service is being provided including new LED lighting controlled by a lighting control system and lighting photometrics in pool rooms to meet local codes. Extensive coordination is required with the pool equipment provider and mechanical engineering for equipment sizes and locations, and with FOSS and Paul Meyer Architects for lighting, receptacle and low voltage device locations.
