Homewood Suites by Hilton is a new $17.0 million hotel located in Edina, Minnesota. The 112,000-square foot building includes 146 hotel rooms, an indoor swimming pool, large lobby, meeting rooms, multiple tall roof parapet features and a two-story glass storefront entrance.
Nelson-Rudie provided structural design services for the slab on grade hotel with four levels of wood stud wall and open web wood truss framing. The tall roof features were designed to give the appearance of an additional level but were framed as open roof parapets to allow the building to be considered a four-story wood structure and avoid the fire rating requirements of a five-story wood structure. Precast concrete plank and masonry block walls were utilized at the middle section of the first level to accommodate the large exterior openings and offsetting structure above. The entrance storefront feature consists of steel moment frames and cantilevered open web wood roof trusses.
