Lawrence J. Robinson

Associate | Director of Technology

Lawrence is an experienced technology leader who oversees Nelson-Rudie’s firmwide digital systems and technical infrastructure. Since joining the firm in 2008, he has built a uniquely cross-disciplinary background — beginning as a structural technician, advancing into BIM management, transitioning into mechanical practice, and ultimately leading technology operations.

As director of technology, Lawrence ensures the firm’s tools, workflows, and systems support high-quality engineering delivery. He manages network administration, BIM platforms, digital standards, and technology training, strengthening collaboration across disciplines and keeping systems secure, scalable, and aligned with modern needs.

Committed to innovation, Lawrence evaluates and deploys emerging technologies that improve efficiency, consistency, and project outcomes. He recently introduced a state-of-the-art terrestrial laser scanning program that captures highly accurate 3D point clouds, improving documentation accuracy, reducing design risk, and enabling more informed decisions — contributing to smoother project delivery and higher quality results.

  • HOBBIES: Biking, gardening, kayaking, and cooking. I’ll take any excuse to be outside in my yard and playing frisbee with my dogs.
  • PETS: Two dogs: Zero (border collie) and Yoshi (black lab), and four cats: Reginald, Tito, Winston, and Opie.
  • FAVORITE TV SHOW: Always changing, but recently I’m enjoying Silo and Fallout.
  • FAVORITE MOVIE: Pulp Fiction
  • FAVORITE VACATION SPOT: I’m not one to revisit the same place twice. My fiancée and I enjoy exploring new cities, especially through their food scenes. A great museum is a bonus, but the true measure of a successful trip is an unforgettable dining experience.
  • HOMETOWN: Minneapolis, MN
  • WHAT ARE THE KEY RESPONSIBILITIES YOU HANDLE DAILY?: My day-to-day varies quite a bit, which is something I’ve always enjoyed about my role. At an organizational level, I oversee BIM, IT, innovation, and technology strategy. This includes ensuring teams have the tools, systems, and resources they need to work effectively; staying attuned to how technology is shaping our industry; and identifying new solutions that improve how we operate and serve our clients. I also lead our playbooks initiative — documenting processes, promoting consistency, and working with operations to continually improve how we deliver work.
  • HOW DO YOU MEASURE SUCCESS IN YOUR CURRENT POSITION?: Success looks different across each area I support. From an IT standpoint, it’s maintaining near‑perfect uptime across hardware and systems. With BIM, I make sure we have strong, usable content and that teams feel supported in their work. Innovation is measured through ROI — evaluating the effort required to improve or create a process against how often it’s used and the time it saves, ultimately assessing the value it brings to the firm.
