LORD OF LIFE LUTHERAN CHURCH EXPANSION AND REMODEL

21,600-square foot, two-story expansion | 4,000-square foot remodel

The Lord of Life project was a $3.2 million, 21,600-square foot, two-level church expansion built into the side of a hill where the upper level is accessible from the new entrance along the east side and the lower level is accessible along the west side. A new expansion to the Fellowship Hall on the upper level required the addition of reinforced concrete pier and footing for a future bay extension of the sanctuary for ease of future construction. The project also involved remodeling 4,000 square feet of existing space including the removal and relocations of bearing walls within offices, kitchen, education and information center areas. New and existing openings were shifted throughout the walls to accommodate new and relocated rooms.

Construction materials included steel joists, steel beams and columns and reinforced masonry block walls for support of new roof framing. New floors were constructed with precast plank and masonry bearing walls.

The project included the relocation of an existing garage to accommodate the new addition. The garage foundation was designed according to ASCE 32-011 Design and Construction of Frost Protected Shallow Foundations. The design is based on a semi-heated thermal classification where minimum average monthly indoor temperatures are 63 degrees. The in-floor slab heating system was provided by the owner. Horizontal insulation was two-inch Type IX – per ASTM C578 expanded polystyrene that extended 6 feet beyond all edges of the foundation and was also used vertically around the shallow 20-inch reinforced concrete grade beams. Because the existing soil on-site was clay, we provided a 6-inch minimum compacted non-frost susceptible granular fill directly below the reinforced concrete garage slab as well as below the insulation board that extended beyond the perimeter of the building. The gravel base around the perimeter was sloped away from the building to a perimeter drain tile system.
