Applewood Pointe of Eden Prairie

Applewood Pointe of Eden Prairie is a new $19.0 million cooperative senior housing development by United Properties where residents enjoy home ownership along with numerous community amenities, programs and activities. Nelson-Rudie was hired by Momentum Design Group LLC for structural design services on this 250,402-square foot, five-story, 100-unit development with a mixture of two-bedroom, two-bedroom plus den and three-bedroom floor plan options. Applewood Pointe is situated nearby the Minnesota River Bluffs Regional Trail and Miller Park Lake as well as several retail shops and restaurants. Building amenities include lounges and community rooms, business center, woodworking shop and craft room, sunroom, library, fitness center and outdoor exercise spaces, storage and underground parking for 113 vehicles.

The building structure consists of masonry foundation walls and precast concrete podium with five levels of wood stud framing above. Grade changes around the garage perimeter created unbalanced soil loads at the precast diaphragm that are resisted by masonry shear walls within the garage. Steel beams and columns were incorporated into the design to accommodate the wide-open first level and main entrance and cantilevered laminated wood beams were designed to support exterior decks at locations with discontinuous wood posts.
